3. A tow truck is using a cable to pull a shipping container of mass m =1200 kg across a horizontal surface as shown in the figure. The cable is attached to the container at the front bottom corner and makes an angle ? =35o with the horizontal as shown. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the surface and the crate is ?k = 0.32

  1. Draw a free-body diagram for the container.

  2. Assuming that the truck pulls the container at a constant acceleration of 0.8 m/s2, Calculate the magnitude T of the tension in the cable.

I have a physics test coming up. I have a question on the study guide, but here is no answers sheet to check against. I have an answer I've come up with but not sure if it's right. Please answer and explain. WILL RATE :)

Answer #1

let tension be T

horizontal component = Tcos(theta)

vertical = Tsin(tehta)

friction = u*N

N = normal force = mg - Tsin(tehta)

Tcos(theta) - friction = Fnet = ma

Tcos(theta) - u*N = m*0.8

Tcos35 - 0.32*(1200x9.8 - Tsin35) = 1200*0.8

Tcos35 - 3763.2 + 0.32*Tsin35 = 960

T(cos35 + 0.32*sin35) = 4723.6

T = 4710.9 N
