A well-insulated, 64 fluid-ounce container is used for drinking water. Unfortunately, the water from the drinking fountain is about 75°F, a little too warm for average taste. To solve this problem, ice is added before filling it completely with water (volume of water and ice equals 64 fluid ounces). Calculate the precise amount of ice needed to cool the water to the coolest temperature that still provides optimal hydration (50°F) by the time all the ice melts and the temperature equilibrates.

Part A) If we wait to drink any water until all the ice melts, will the final volume of water in the jug be less than, equal to, or greater than 64 fluid ounces?

Part B) How much ice (in grams) must be added to cool the water to the specified 50°C?

Part C) In order to solve this problem, you needed to assume that the jug was perfectly insulated, such that there is no heat transfer between the system and surroundings. Given that this is probably not true, and assuming the average room temp is kept at 74°F, should the actual amount of ice he adds be more or less than the amount that he calculated?
