Arrays as data structures are considered to have better performance in comparison to symbol tables. In the lecture, you might have noticed an example of a symbol table defined for keys of type Integer (e.g. <Integer>, <String>). Provide an example that justifies the use of the symbol table that utilizes Integer as a key over an array. Explain your choice.

Answer #1

A symbol table is a data type that we use to associate values with keys. Clients can store (put) an entry into the symbol table by specifying a key-value pair and then can retrieve (get) the value corresponding to a particular key from the symbol table.

For example, if a client wants to count the frequency of an element in a list, symbol table can store the key vs the frequency of the key in the list. Doing so, it gives constant time complexity to get the frequency of an element. Arrays are not so efficient.

Array Vs Symbol Table Comparison Code A) B) C) D) What is the key difference between an array and a symbol table? Assume you have a bunch of objects containing information about different SER classes and need to store their data somewhere. You could use their course number as a key and then store them into either an array or symbol table - which would be better if you wanted to quickly print out all of the classes? Explain. Show...

    0. Introduction. This involves designing a perfect hash function for a small set of strings. It demonstrates that if the set of possible keys is small, then a perfect hash function need not be hard to design, or hard to understand. 1. Theory. A hash table is an array that associates keys with values. A hash function takes a key as its argument, and returns an index in the array. The object that appears at the index is the key’s...

PROBLEM STATEMENT: Suppose you have a client that has given you the following business rules to form the basis for a database design. The database must enable the manager of a company dinner club to mail invitations to the club’s members, to plan the meals, to keep track of who attends the dinners, and so on. Each dinner serves many members, and each member may attend many dinners. A member receives many invitations, and each invitation is mailed to many...

The first file is an array based list. We have looked at node based implementations of both stacks and queues. An array based list utilizes an array of nodes to support common operations; note that the node class that we utilize has neither next nor previous references. Integer subscripts are maintained to keep track of both the front and rear. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ class Node { private int key; public Node() { key = -1; } public Node(int k) { key =...
