How can you improve the resolution between two closely spaced peaks in gas chromatography. Describe the process you would undertake to improve separation.
In general, a compound with lower boiling point will move faster
in the GC column than a compound with a higher boiling point. Now,
that is assuming that the interaction between these two solutes and
the stationary phase are of nearly equal magnitudes (but that is an
overstatement, many factors are still at play here). With that in
mind, we can infer that changing the column temperature will have
an effect on the rate of retention/elution. Increasing the column
temperature will allow greater separation of two molecules with
wide differences in boiling points.
Regarding the second parameter, increasing the gas flow rate will
shorten the amount of time these solutes will stay in the column,
i.e. your run time will decrease.
Then, if you attempt several tweaks for these two parameters
(column temperature and flow rate), you may be able to separate
very close (or overlapping) peaks and achieve them in a relatively
short run time.
Second option is use a narrower column, or a longer column, or try different stationary phases.

What would be the effect of raising the temperature or increasing the carrier gas flow rate one the ability to resolve two closely spaced peaks?(experiment : The dilute sulfuric acid-catalyzed dehydration on 2-methyl-2-butanol(t-amylalcohol) proceeds readily to give a mixture of alkenes that can be analyzed by gas chromatography)
4. The compounds in a mixture separated by GC can be identified by their retention times. If you Suructor nad not told you which peak in the GC chromatogram corresponded to which alker you didn't know the boiling points of the alkenes, how could you determine the identity or each peak by its retention time? Identities of the components in a mixture separated by GC can also be determined by the technique called "spiking". Suppose you had run a chromatogram...
EXERCISE 6: Two chemical species, A and B are separated by isothermal gas chromatography, using a 2.00 m column having 5000 theoretical plates at a flow rate of 15.0 ml / min. The peak of unabsorbed air appears after 30 s; the peak of A appears after 5 min and that of B after 12 min (a) Calculate the dead volume VM of the column, and the retention volumes Va and VB. (b) Calculate the reduced volumes V’a and V'B...
Describe the differences between paper chromatography and TLC. Give two advantages and two disadvantages of each method for analysis. In order to prepare for a column chromatography separation of 3 ink dye components, you have run a TLC experiment with three possible solvent mixtures. These are the results: Acetone:Hexane in 1:1 ratio gave the following distances: solvent=4.2cm, pigment #1=3.8cm, pigment #2=1.7cm, and pigment #3=1.3cm Acetone:Hexane in 2:1 ratio gave the following distances: solvent=4.3cm, pigment #1=3.8cm, pigment #2=2.1cm, and pigment...

A capacitor consists of two closely spaced metal conductors of large area, separated by a thin insulating film. One of the many practical uses of a capacitor is to store up some energy, to be released in a sudden burst (like lighting up the flash bulb in a camera!) A decent (not too expensive) capacitor in such a camera might be 100 uF, and could release a total electrical energy of 4.8 J in a flash. What voltage difference would...
