Tapeworm (Taenia solium):

Diseases caused & transmitted: The diseases caused by T. solium are intestinal infection, cysticercosis, neurocysticercosis, and infection in the brain ( Cerebralcysticercosis)

Classification: Kingdom - Animalia

Phylum - Platyhelminthes

Class - Cestoda

Order - Cyclophyllidae

Family - Taenidae

Genus - Taenia

Species- T.Solium

Distribution: It is found worldwide, most commonly in cosmopolitan areas. High prevalence are Mexico, Latin America, West Africa, Russia, India, Pakistan, Manchuria and Southeast Asia.

Signs & symptoms: Intestinal infectin of T.solium is called taeniasis which is asymptomatic. Intestinal irritation, anemia, indigestion which lead to loss of appetite and amaciation.

Transmission: It has two hosts, they are defininitive host (human) and intermediate host (pigs) It can be transmitted by infection of contaminated food, eating of uncooked pork.

Clinical ID: Cystecercosis is infection with larvae of T.solium which develops after ingestion of ova excreted in human faces.

Treatment: Praziquantel or Niclosamide are used for treatment of beef and pork tapeworm infection.

Preventin: Avoiding fecal contamination of soil, and human and animal food.

Transmission: Pinworm infection spreads through human to human transmission by i ingesting infectious pinworms eggs.

Order - Oxyurida

Family - Oxyuridae

Genus - Enterobius

Species - Enterobius vermicularis.

Distribution: The pinworm is worldwide distribution. The most common infections in United States, Western Europe and Oceania.

Signs and symptoms: As adult female pinworms travel outside the body at night and lay eggs around the anus cause itching and discomfort, irritability and sleep problems.

Transmission: It is common in children and transmitted via the fecal-oral route.

Clinical ID: Infection begins with eggs ingestion. The eggs hatch in the duodenum. The emerging pinworm larvae grow and migrate through small intestine towards the colon.

Treatment: Drugs kill adult worms but not eggs. So treatment is recommended for two weeks. The Benzimidazole compounds Albendazole, pyrantel pamoate are the most effective.
