Woolworths Holdings Ltd. (WHL) announced its goals for 2020 as the Good Business Journey. This company, launched in 2007 in s. Africa in 2007 has aimed to reduce the business environmental impact and increase the social and economic impact across its value chain. The focus areas were :

Energy. Water, Sustainable Farming, Ethical Sourcing, Transformation, Social Development and Health and Wellness.

In order to accomplish its goals the management has decided to extend the knowledge and experiences gained in South Africa to all parts of the global world. The key goals for GBJ - 2020 are defined as :-

  • Contribute R3.5Bn to communities over the next 5 years.
  • Save 500 bn liters of water in next 5 years.
  • The company reduces its energy consumption by 50% by 2020 and achieves 100% clean energy by 2030.
  • Responsible sourcing of all key commodities
  • Every Private -label product sold has at-least one sustainability attribute.

The confidence level of the company, its staff and its suppliers seems to be high as they have delivered some great results in their last effort from 2012 - 2015. They achieved 87% of its set target with an impact on all the eight parameters that they has identified. (as mentioned above).

In their journey from 2007 till date the company has achieved remarkable milestones ( as sustainable attributes of products, reduce water and electricity usage, contributions to the communities, etc), incorporated the positive learning, and have set significant new industry benchmarks. In the GBJ 2020, WHL, as a group, has decided to go global extending its South African experience to Cross borders and Australia.

One of the key aspects is the traceability and the development of responsible sourcing strategies for high risk commodities. The strategy include the purchase and processing of Palm oil, cocoa, sugar, soya, cotton and viscose. Secondly, the focus would be on an improved animal welfare rating system and responses. Thirdly, eliminating hazardous chemical usage across clothing supply chain.
