Question

CONWIP & Push Systems

Consider a production line with three single-machine stations in series. Each has processing times with mean 2 hours and standard deviation of 2 hours. Jobs are released at a rate of 0.45 jobs per hour. Also assume the arrivals are exponentially distributed. Suppose if this line has been run as a push system what is the average WIP in the line? Now if this line has been run as a CONWIP line with a WIP level equal to the previous answer, what will be the resulting throughput rate?

Consider a production line with three single-machine stations in series. Each has processing times with mean two hours and standard deviation of two hours. a. Suppose we run this line as a push system and release jobs into it at a rate of 0.45 per hour with arrival variability given by Ca = 1. What is the average WIP in the line? b. The owner of a barbershop has two barber chairs and one employee. The owner will cut a customer’s hair only if her employee is already busy cutting someone else’s hair. Service times are exponentially distributed with mean 1 hour, and the time between arrivals is exponentially distributed with mean 1.5 hours. When the barbershop is full(i.e., two customers are getting haircuts), people must wait outside in line. a)What percentage of the time is the owner cutting hair? b)If the owner...

The school of business at abc university has a information desk manned by one student worker. It takes him an average of 3 minutes to answer questions raised by guests who visit the school building. Guests arrive at the desk at the rate of 15 per hour. 1. A new shopping mall is considering setting up a car wash manned by six employees. From past data, Regal Car Wash estimates that dirty cars arrive at the rate of 10 per hour all day Saturday. With a crew working the wash line, Regal figures that cars can be cleaned at the rate of one every 5 minutes. One car at a time is cleaned in this example of a single-channel waiting line. It is assumed that arrivals are...

Consider a simple queuing system in which customers arrive randomly such that the time between successive arrivals is exponentially distributed with a rate parameter l = 2.8 per minute. The service time, that is the time it takes to serve each customer is also Exponentially distributed with a rate parameter m = 3 per minute. Create a Matlab simulation to model the above queuing system by randomly sampling time between arrivals and service times from the Exponential Distribution. If a...

n the previous two US presidential elections, very long wait times have been witnessed at precincts (voting stations) in states that ultimately decided the election (Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004). In Iowa City as well, some voters complained about the long lines in some precincts, with most complaints coming from precinct A. In 2018, the average number of voters arriving at Precinct A was 35 per hour and the arrivals of voters was random with inter-arrival times that...
