Integral simply means to sum up - At least in lay mans terms. Mathematically, it means a method to find the are enclosed by a curve under itself. Obviously it means to break the are into very small pieces and the adding up. Now this can be between two intersecting curves to give a finite value as answer or it can be between two curves that dont intersect giving infinite as answer. The former is proper integral and the latter is the improper integral. If you are given only one curve, the integration with respect to x gives are under the curve with x axis whereas with respect to y gives area under the curve with y axis.
