Flame ionization detectors (FIDs) burn eluate in the presence of and air. This process produces radicals from carbon atoms, except for carbonyl and carboxyl carbon atoms. The radicals then produce ions. The

ions are what produce the FID signal.

FIDs are sensitive to most hydrocarbons, such as propane, n‑pentane, and 2‑methylpentane.

FIDs are insensitive to nonhydrocarbons, such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide.
