The cause of abolition--abolishing slavery-- started before the ink was even dry on the Declaration of Independence, as many Americans, particularly those in the northern regions, felt that holding humans in bondage was immoral and diametrically opposed to the ideas proclaimed by the new democratic nation. The first decades of the 19th century witnessed many slave revolts across the South, in which slaves killed many of their white owners. Perhaps the best known was Nat Turner's revolt in Southhampton, Virginia, in 1831. A couple decades later, another abolitionist, John Brown, created a firestorm with his raid on the Harpers' Ferry arsenal in 1859. Many historians claim this event was the trigger that started the Civil War. What was this about and what did it accomplish?
