At a certain harbor, the tides cause the ocean surface to rise and fall a distance d (from highest level to lowest level) in simple harmonic motion, with a period of 11.7 h. How long does it take for the water to fall a distance 0.250d from its highest level?

Answer #1

amplitude will be d/2.

starting from highest level then equation of SHM will be

y = A cos(wt)

w = 2pi/T = 2pi/(11.7 hr)

y = (d/2) cos(2 pi t / 11.7)

putting y = 0.250d

0.250d = 0.500d cos(2pi t / 11.7)

cos(2 pi t / 11.7) = 0.5

2 pi t / 11.7 = pi/3

t = 11.7 / (2 x 3) = 1.95 h

    Here's all the information I have A certain bay with very high tides displays the following behavior. In one 12-h period the water starts at mean sea level, rises to 19 ft above, drops to 19 ft below, then returns to mean sea level. Assuming that the motion of the tides is simple harmonic, find an equation that describes the height of the tide in this bay above mean sea level. (Let y be the height above sea level in...

    The archerfish spits at land-based insects to cause them to fall into the water, where they are easy prey. If the archerfish spits its water 45 degrees from the horizontal aiming at an insect 2 m above the surface of the water, how fast must the fish spit the water to hit its target? The insect is at the highest point of the trajectory of the spit water. Use g = 10 m/s2.
