Whenever light is passed through a sample the transmitted light is deprived of the wavelength absorbed. The wavelength complimentary to absorbed wavelength is emitted.

If the absorption takes place in visible region then corresponding electronic spectra results in colour. The absorption in visible region take place when energy difference is less.

In transition metal ion in presence of ligand field the degeneracy of five d-orbital is lost and they split in two parts. When light falls on transition metal ion absorption occur in visible region and d-d transition occurs which results in colour
