Suppose for any class in a university, one expects 50% of the students to have grade
equal or above B+, while the remaining students to be below B+. Now in one class of 20
students, eventually there are 12 students having grade equal or above B+, while the remaining
8 students are below that. How well does the observations fit the expectation? Using the
goodness-of-fit chi-square test to give a p-value.

Suppose the local state university wants to determine whether there is a relationship between a student’s gender and a student’s major in college. The registrar was asked to randomly select 55 students and record their gender and major. The majors were grouped into categories of Natural Science (NS), Social Sciences (SS), and Humanities (H). Suppose that we want to investigate whether curfews correlate with differences in grades for students in middle school. We select a random sample of 81 middle school students. The variables are curfew (yes/no) and grade (a letter grade that represents the average grade across courses). Is there an association between grade and curfew? Or are these two variables independent? We use the data to conduct a chi-square test of independence at the 5% level. In the table, the observed count...

A college professor is curious if the location of a seat in class affects grades in the class. They are teaching in a lecture hall with 240 students. The lecture hall has 10 rows, so they split the rows into 5 sections – Rows 1-2, Rows 3-4, Rows 5-6, Rows 7-8, and Rows 9-10. At the end of the course, they determine the top 25% of grades in the class, and if the location of the seat makes no difference,...
