2. Explain how democracy, by its very nature, leads inevitably to crime. Give examples of how criminals' activities are facilitated by democracy's tenets.
Democracy - A reason for increase in Crime:
Democracy paves way for committing crime in one or the other ways.
Below are the
reasons and examples.
1. Strong autocracies manage to control violent crime through more
repressive
techniques of social control and punishment. But in democratic
state the
punishment is not severe on the grounds of humanity, which is taken
as
advantage by the assailants. One best example is sexual harassment
or rape
cases which are more in democratic countries when compared to
other
countries.
2. Another example can be cited in a democratic country like India,
where during
2008, the government of India was led by the Congress Party and
they faced a
vote of no confidence over the controversial U.S.-India civil
nuclear deal. The
government was so nervous it might actually fail this vote and
would have to
call fresh elections that, 24 hours before the vote was to take
place, they
temporarily released six members of Parliament [from jail] who were
either
convicted or indicted of committing murder, have them come to
Parliament,
cast a vote and then get carted back off to jail. This can happen
only in a
democratic country and the democracy grooms the criminal
politicians.
