Non-membrane bound organelles:

  • Ribosomes: Ribosomes are subcellular particles composed of two subunits which contain the ribosomal RNA and associated protein. Ribosomes are the protein manufacturing factories of the cell. These are not bound by any unit membrane and have a particle like nature
  • Centrosomes: Centrosome is an organelle that serves as a Microtubule organising center. It is composed of two centrioles arranged at right angle to each other and surrounded by mass of amorphous protein termed as pericentriolar material.

Membrane bound Organelles:

  • Golgi apparatus: Single membrane bound organelle, it consists of flattened membranous sac like structures.
  • Peroxisome: These are single membrane bound vesicles that contain digestive enzymes for breaking down toxic material in the cell.
  • Rough endoplasmic reticulum: It is called rough because of the ribosomes attached to its surface. It also has a sac like membrane bound structure and helps in protein processing and packaging.
  • Lysosome : Single membrane bound vesicle which consists hydrolysing enzymes. Take part in digestion of food and waste disposal from cells.
  • Mitochondria: Double membrane bound cell organeele, also known as powerhouse of cell, as ATP synthesis machinery of cell is housed in mitochondria.

Cytoskeleton:

  • Microtubule: Microtubules are the largest cytoskeletal filaments in cells, with a diameter of 25 nanometers. They are made out of subunits called tubulin.
  • Intermediate filaments: They have a diameter average between microtubules and actin microfilaments. They are the structural components of cytoskeleton.
  • Microfilaments: These are the narrowest of all cytoskeletal filaments and function in cellular movements. These are made of two intertwined strands of a globular protein called actin.
