An object with a mass of 18g and a volume of 37 cm3 is placed in a liquid with a density of 1.25 g/cm3. Find the volume (in cm3) of the part of the object that is NOT submerged in the liquid. Give your answer with 3 significant figures.
Buoyant force is equal to weight of the object. Thus:-
mg = Vin * sigma * g
Where sigma is the liquid's density. Vin is the volume dipped inside the liquid.
Solving we get Vin = 18/1.25 cm3 = 14.4 cm3.
Thus Vout = Total Volume - Vin = 37-14.4 = 22.6 cm3
the volume (in cm3) of the part of the object that is NOT submerged in the liquid = 22.6 cm3.
MORE THE VOLUME OF THE OBJECT SUBMERGED MORE IS THE BUOYANCY FORCE
Equilibrium is When buoyancy force=Weight of the body
buoyancy force=Volume submerged*density
Weight of the object=18*g/1000
buoyancy force=Volume submerged*1.25*g/1000
Volume submerged*1.25*g/1000 = 18*g/1000
Volume submerged=18/1.25
=14.4cm^3
volume not submerged=37-14.4
Volume not submerged=22.6cm^3
