Carla is a 67-year-old neighbor who calls you one morning to say she has injured herself and asks if you would take her to the emergency department. When you arrive at her house, she has an obvious deformity of her right wrist. She states she tripped, fell forward, and tried to stop her fall with her right hand. She fractured her left hip a few months prior to this incident. Carla is typically sedentary and is small in stature and very slim. What condition would you consider might be a factor in her recent skeletal injuries? How would you advise her?

Answer #1

Osteoporosis is the disease that is more likely to cause weak bones, this condition occurs when body looses more bone than what it can produce. Osteoporosis causes bone to become weak and brittle, it becomes so brittle that even minor fall or mild stress such as bending can cause fractures. Osteoporosis is more common in women who are older than 65 years, especially if they are leading a sedentry life style. Women who are thin and have a small body frame tend to have higher risk for this condition, since they have less bone mass.

In a condition like osteoporosis it very important to limit bone loss and rebuild bone to prevent fractures, healthy lifestyle choices such as proper diet, exercise, medication can all improve this condition, diet should contain good amount of calcium, dark green leafy vegetables, salmon or sardines, calcium fortified cereals and orange juice can all help, weight bearing exercise can help prevent bone loss or help to strengthen the allready weak bones. She should check her calcium and vitamin D levels, as vitamin D is important for calcium absorption from body.
