MIO (Motility Indole Ornithine Medium) and SIM (Sulfur Indole Motility Media) test for motility of bacteria through the agar. MIO media detects motility, indole production and ornithine decarboxylation, while SIM media detects motility, indole production and ability to reduce sulfur to produce hydrogen sulfide. Oxygen requirements of bacteria can be assessed by thioglycolate broth.

Viruses have lytic and lysogenic life cycles. In the lytic cycle, the viral cell replicates inside the host and then the host cell bursts to release new viral particles.
