46 46 Module Two discussion topic It seems like everyday a new anti-depressant is put on the market. So here are the questions for this discussion. Do we need so many anti-depressants? Can patients become addicted to them? Are they helpful? How do they work? What are some patient safety concerns when a patient starts an anti-depressant? Are there situations where patients are put on anti-depressants when it's not necessary to do so? Antidepressants are used to treat major depression,panic disorder and other anxiety disorders,bipolar depression,psychotic depression,sometimes for migraines,sleepapnea and eating disorders.The main goals of antidepressant medications are alleviate depressive symptoms,restore normal mood,prevent recurrence of depression and prevent a swing into mania.Antidepressants have psychological effects and vary from person to person.We havea whole bunch of antidepressants available in the market..It is hard to predict which drug works better for an individual.So doctors often suggest taking a drug that they consider to be effective and relatively well tolerated and if it is not acting as it is expected,they are changed.So it happens that doctors have to prescribe a number of different drugs ,have to be tried out before you find one that works.The exact mechanism is unknown .The predominant action is by increasing catecholamine levels in the brain. Like all medications,antidepressants can have sideffects.Patients on MAOI s should be warned against the danger of ingesting tyramine-rich foods which can result in hypertensive crisi.Some of these foods are beefliver,chicken liver,fermented saucages,dried fish,overriped fruits,chocolate and beverages like wine,beer and coffee.Instruct the client not to take any medications without prescriptions.Sometimes antidepressants are prescribed unnecessarily.Even in milder cases of depression ,antidepressants are prescribed.But at the same time severe depression is diagnosed and treated properly as these will help them to cope in everyday life or enable to start psychological treatment.
