Horizontal velocity of storm water

Verticle distance between creek and pipe

When the storm water flows out of the pipe before reaching the creek it also travels a small horizontal distance. We are asked to find that distance.

Let us consider the verticle motion of the water while falling to crek.

We ignore air resitance and the water experiences acceleration due to gravity.

From one of the equation kinematics, the verticle distance travelled is,

is the intial velocity while flowing in y direction(vertical motion) which is zero. Because vertical velocity at the highest point is always zero.

Now we have,

Lets find time taken by the water to meet creek.

Plug in the values of H and g and we get t

The horizontal distance travelled by water in 0.74 seconds is

Substitute the values of vh and t,

We get the horizontal distance travelled by the water before meeting the creek,
