In an experiment, rats were fed with " 6 carbon - saturated fatty acid ", whose hydrogen atoms were replaced by tritium.

After a muscle biopsy was performed, all Acetyl CoA molecules (derived from "beta-oxidation" of carbonic acid) were separated and their CoA tails were removed, leaving behind only isolated acetate molecules.
What is the ratio between tritium and carbon in these acetate molecules? Explain your answer.

Answer #1

6C saturated fatty acid = CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-COOH

C:H ratio = 6:12 = 1:2

It undergoes two rounds of beta-oxidation two produce 3 acetyl CoA molecules.

In each round, two hydrogen atoms are removed from the fatty acid. So, total 4 hydrogen atoms are removed.

C:H ratio = 6:8 = 3:4
