NMR provides information about the connection patterns between atoms in a molecule. For example, it can tell you that there is an ethyl group in the molecule. How does this complete the picture for structure elucidation?

Answer #1

If the ethyl group is present in a compound then it must give the following kind of pattern:

CH3-CH2-

CH3- triplet (t)

n+1 = 2+1 = 3, where n is the number of nearer equivalent protons.

-CH2- quartet (q)

n+1 = 3+1 = 4, where n is the number of nearer equivalent protons.

This kind of splitting pattern will appear in the NMR spectrum which will help to elucidate the structure of the compound.

    2. This problem will help you understand how two atoms can form a molecule through the process of chemical bonding. The physics behind the chemical bonding is very much the same as that discussed in energy splitting process to form energy bands in a macroscopic matter state where we have a lot of atoms involved but all atoms are nicely arranged to form a kind of periodic structure. In this problem, let's make things even simpler: we only consider two...

  • A covalent bond is a bond in which electrons are shared between atoms of elements

A covalent bond is a bond in which electrons are shared between atoms of elements. A covalent bond can be polar or nonpolar. In a nonpolar covalent bond, the bond is between two identical atoms and the electrons are evenly shared between the atoms. In contrast, in a polar covalent bond, the bond is between two nonidentical atoms and the electrons are unevenly shared between the atoms. The uneven sharing of electrons takes place because of the difference in the electronegativity...

Change the bond between the two carbon atoms in each molecule to a double or triple bond as needed to complete the structure. If the bond should remain a single bond, then you do not need to do anything to the bond. Do not change any other bonds in the molecules.
