Penicillin a antibiotic was discovered in 1928 by alexander fleming. These were ranked the most important scientific discovery as they were among the first antibiotic to be effective against bacterial infection.Penicillin belongs to different families which are effective against wide range of bacteria.

This antibiotic was actually discovered by fleming by and accident in which he left open a dish containing staphylococi and was contaiminated by a green mould. There was a patch of inhibited growth of bacteria around the mould from which he concluded the mould released a substance which inhibited the bacterial growth.On further reasearch it was found that it was a penicillium mould.

It is basically a filtrate of broth culture of the mould of penicillium.

I believe that penicillin is the most important discovery thus far as it was the first antibiotic ever discovered against bacterial infection when there were no medications available.
