If a ball rolls off the edge of a table at velocity u, what happens to...

If a ball rolls off the edge of a table at velocity u, what happens to its angular velocity ? Say if I wanted to calculate the velocity of the ball as it strikes the ground using energy methods, would I use PEi + KEi = PEf + KEf and I plug in u for the initial kinetic (1/2mu^2), mgh for initial potential, then 1/2mv^2 + 1/2 I*w^2 for the final kinetic ? And then solve for v ?

Or would I use mgh=1/2mv^2 (and not use u because that is the velocity in the x direction ?) and then solve for v (v=sqrt(2gh)) and then use v=sqrt(vx^2 + vy^2) to find the final velocity ?

What happens to the angular velocity while the ball is in the air ?
