The American economy started changing in the years following the civil war. In 1800, american economy was purely based on agriculture but the imdustrial revolution changed it to become one of the worlds leading industrial powers by 1900.

The first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, created government sponsered banks to increase tariffs, which in turn encourages industrial development.

Government programs gave shape and form to the American School and the American System (which include the establishment of the Patent Office in ), the creation of the Coast and Geodetic Survey and many other measures to improve river and harbor navigation.

States built roads and waterways, such as the Cumberland Pike and the Erie Canal, which created opening markets for western farm products.

An outburst of technological innovation in the late 19th century fueled this economic growth.

Old industries expanded and many new ones, including petroleum refining, steel manufacturing, and electrical power, emerged. Railroads expanded significantly, bringing even remote parts of the country very close and creating a national market economy.
