As shown, a pipe serves as a short column. The 4 - inch diameter steel pipe has 6 in x 6 in in steel plates welded to its ends. The top column plate carries a 5-1/8" wide wood beam that exerts an axial load on the column of 11,800 lbs., including the weight of the beam. The bottom plate bears on a concrete pad. The weight of the column is 53.5 lbs. Compressive stress in the steel must not exceed 20,000 psi. In wood and concrete, the compressive stress must not exceed 400 psi.

1. Determine the maximum axial compressive load the column can support without exceeding the allowable stress in the wood and concrete.
