Teamwork is not working at Southeastern Electric Company (SEC). Juan Morales, quality director for SEC, is growing increasingly frustrated. The company’s executive managers all advocate teamwork. A cross-functional team developed a promotional campaign with a teamwork motto, banners, bulletins, and a video. Everybody talks about teamwork, but nobody does it. Juan doesn’t know what to do. If he asked for your advice, what would you tell him to do? How can he identify the problem, and what steps should he take to resolve it?

A complete answer will explain the concepts of team building and teamwork, list the character traits of team members of successful teams, and summarize strategies for leading multicultural teams.

First let us understand what is team building and what is team work . When we indulge in team building and pursue teamwork at the far end we have our objective and or our goal . We form teams to achieve goals and this team forming is team building . We bring here into the team individuals where each individual has certain skills , knowledge and education levels which if comes off will contribute heavily to the achievement of the objective . So when we look at the objective we analyse and find out individuals with what skill sets , knowledge & education levels will be required . Based upon this we choose team members . This is called team building . For example is a football team where we typically have a goal keeper , four full backs , four half backs and 2 players upfront as forwards .

Once the team is build a leader is required who will lead these diverse team members with diverse skills . Leader need to know the team members in and out to find out how to get the best out of them . What motivates them to give off their best .

Now along with team and an able leader , strategies are also required to circumvent a win win scenario . These are most essential as these and their perfect execution will make the team a winning team .

Now when all of these individuals in the team comes off together with their individual skills , knowledge & education levels the common target or common goal or common objective is achieved . And we have teamwork in place . What ever the team achieves it is on account of the team work in the team . 2+2 is always 5 . So when teams come off they achieve far greater than what they would have achieved individually .

Juan Morales has to understand these two concepts Team Building & Team Work thoroughly if he wants SEC to grow as an organisation .
