Salt is considered to be an ionic substance, while sugar is commonly thought of as a covalent (or molecular) substance. Keeping that in mind, if you were given 2 unidentified white crystals and asked to classify them as either ionic or covalent in nature, what steps would you take and what evidence would you look for?

Answer #1

First step that we take is to put both in the flame . This is to test the melting point

if melting occurs then it will be covalent compound and if no melting occurs then it will be ionic compound. this is the first prelimanary evidence

then to further confirm we test for its conductivity . since salt is ionic so it furnishes ions in its aqueous solution hence it will conduct electricity while sugar solution does not conduct electricity

this will be the step taken to identify salt and sugar solution
