Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of the digestive system, affecting the large intestine. It is characterized by altered bowel habits along with abdominal discomfort. The symptoms of this disease are perplexing as they involve the bowel being constipated at one time and lax at another time. It generates a significant health care burden and severely impairs the quality of life. Also, it is the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal condition.

The exact cause of this disease in unknown but most likely, it may be due to increased sensitivity of the entire gut, and possible psychological causes. Other factors that may contribute to IBS include abnormal muscle contractions of the small intestine, inflammation in the intestine, a viral or bacterial infection and changes in the microflora.

The symptoms include abdominal pain, stomach cramps, bloating, excessive gas, diarrhea or constipation etc. Not all of these symptoms are gastrointestinal, for example, fatigue is very common.The exact causes of these symptoms are unknown as mentioned before, but may be triggered by certain factors. These include intolerance or allergy to some foods, stress and sometimes, hormones. Serotonin regulation is abnormal in IBS. Its release in plasma appears reduced in those with constipation and increased in those with diarrhea. In addition to these, IBS can also be triggered by alcohol, fizzy drinks, caffeine, fatty and fried food etc.

Supportive or non-essential symptoms of IBS include fewer than three bowel movements in a day per week, more than three bowel movements per day, hard or lumpy stools, loose or watery stools, straining during a bowel movement, urgency, feeling of incomplete emptying, passing mucus during a bowel movement, abdominal fullness, bloating or swelling.

These symptoms if not managed well, have severe implications on the body. Abnormalities in the nerves in the digestive system can cause a greater than normal discomfort. Some people have an increased number of immune cells in their intestine due to IBS. This increase in the immune cells may further lead to pain and diarrhea. It may also result in excessive bacterial growth in the gut, if the causative agent is a bacteria. All these effects reduce a person's efficiency considerably and hamper the individual's overtall lifestyle.

The age of occurrence of IBS is between 20-30 years. As per studies, females are more susceptible to IBS than males. Also, people who have a family history of IBS are more likely to have it. Psychological problems such as anxiety, depression and emotional abuse are associated with IBS. It becomes very difficult for people to live with IBS as they deal with the pain, discomfort and embarrassment.

Specific diet may be followed by people suffering from IBS. In case of diarrhea, insoluble fibre may be consumed and in case of constipation, soluble fibre intake of soluble fibre would be helpful. Starch avoidance, plenty of fluid intake, restriction of caffeine intake, avoidance of alcohol and fizzy drinks can help relieve the symptoms. Further, exercise, yoga/ meditation and probiotics can also help in the management of the symptoms. IBS is majorly manageable, with few people showing extremely severe and chronic symptoms.
