Discussion Board: (200-250 words)

Jacob,

The main difference between a population and a sample is that a certain part of the population is known as the sample. Population usually refers to people in a town, area, state, or country. When being referred to, population can include age, gender, marital status, ethnicity, and religion, among other things. As mentioned before, only a section of the population is known as a sample. The main reason why sampling processes are often used in places of censuses is because sampling is generally more accurate than a census because censuses increase bias from non-sampling error. Population at times can be as accurate as, or more accurate than a census. This is because population estimates are essentially approximations, they aren't meant to be super precise. The estimates of population are generally tracked by population change. The one thing about population is that its estimates never extend beyond what the present value is. Censuses are based off of prior data and trends; on the other hand population comes from realistic indicator data. For example, Quicken Loans may want to know the main demographic area where their clients are in need of a refinance or purchase of a home. They would rather look at the current population of that area, rather than a census because it is more accurate numerically. In this case, a census would be less accurate because they happen less frequently and do not take into account the physical numbers that represent how many people are in a certain demographic area.

The Discussion Board
The above presented message intends to develop an understanding of the concept of population and sample and the major differences between the two. . The message highlights the fact that population refers to a large number of people of different gender, age, religion, etc. constituting an area , region or community while the sample refers to certain number of important people acting as representatives for the whole population.
I agree that the choice of using sampling over census is because sampling proves more accurate and reliable than census. And the information recieved from samples can be obtained more quickly, cheaply and accurately from the source which is a part of the population itself and thus understands the situation or needs of its population in better way.
Moreover it to a great extend is true that Census in most times results in biased opinion which can be prevented using sampling instead of it.
The main reason can be the fact that sampling uses very smaller data set to collect information than the census which helps in developing homogeneity and thus improves quality and data accuracy.

It is true that the results recieved from sampling are either as accurate as Census and in other times also prove to be more accurate than it. Thus acting as a better choice.

By understanding the concept that the census are actually based on trends and prior data, we get a vivid understanding of how sampling is accurate as it is based on the first hand information and population of area thus can prove to be a realistic indicator.

The example of Quicken Loans reflect further looking at the current population rather than using census can actually help it to know the need to refinance or purchase of home in a particular demographic area through analyzing the population and thus receiving more accurate quantitative estimate.

Therefore in conclusion we can say that looking at population and using sampling for getting estimations about any data set will prove to be more beneficial than using a census. Moreover sampling proves to be less expensive and more faster than Census.

The message thus intended to communicate the significance of using sampling and population estimates over census and succeeded in convincing the audience of the same.
