The electron transport chain eases the fall of electrons to the terminal oxygen so that ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) will be produced.

This is important because:

In electron transport chain, oxygen accepts electrons and it also used protons to produce water.

If oxygen do not accept electrons then the electron transport chain will not run and ATP will not produced through chemiosmosis.

If ATP will not produced then cells cannot perform function as reactions will not takes place.

Electrons will more stable when they move down the chain and oxygen is present at the end.

Overall reaction is:

Glucose -> NADH -> electron transport chain -> oxygen
