Suppose traffic accidents at a road intersection occur once every 7 days. It can be assumed there is no more than 1 accident occurring at this intersection simultaneously, and at this intersection accidents can occur at any time. Also, an accident is not due to other accidents.

(What type of distribution is this i.e. Gaussian, Poisson, etc.?)

  1. What is the probability that there are 3 accidents during the next 15 days at the intersection? Calculate by hand.
  2. What is the average number of accidents during the next 15 days at the intersection? Calculate by hand.

State and local governments conduct traffic studies for a variety of reasons. Studies can be components of broader economic impact studies to understand how a new proposed development might impact existing traffic flows. Such studies can also be focused on a specific question such as whether additional traffic control (lights and signage) are needed at a particular intersection, or if additional lanes are needed on a busy road to relieve traffic congestion. State transportation departments also use traffic studies to...

Hello, need help solving the rest. I might be doing it wrong and cannot figure it out. Thank you. The Poisson distribution gives the probability for the number of occurrences for a "rare" event. Now, let x be a random variable that represents the waiting time between rare events. Using some mathematics, it can be shown that x has an exponential distribution. Let be a random variable and let o be a constant. Thenis a curve representing the exponential distribution....

The Binomial and Poisson Distributions Both the Binomial and Poisson Distributions deal with discrete data where we are counting the number of occurrences of an event. However, they are very different distributions.  This problem will help you be able to recognize a random variable that belongs to the Binomial Distribution, the Poisson Distribution or neither. Characteristics of a Binomial Distribution Characteristics of a Poisson Distribution The Binomial random variable is the count of the number of success in n trials:   number of...
