Think of some of the benefits that encoders and decoders bring to electronic systems. Discuss some applications of encoders and decoders, the advantages of having encoders and decoders in electronic systems, and how those systems would be different without encoders and decoders. Think of such systems as cars, TVs, kitchen appliances, computers, and cell phones, for a few examples.

The purpose of encoder is standardization, speed, secrecy, security, or saving space by shrinking size. Encoders are combinational logic circuits and they are exactly opposite of decoders. They accept one or more inputs and generate a multibit output code. Encoders perform exactly reverse operation than decoder.

Encoder Applications. Encoders are used to translate rotary or linear motion into a digital signal. Usually this is for the purpose of monitoring or controlling motion parameters such as speed, rate, direction, distance or position.

  • The Decoders were used in analog to digital conversion in analog decoders.
  • Used in electronic circuits to convert instructions into CPU control signals.
  • They mainly used in logical circuits, data transfer.

Encoders and Decoders are indeed very important for any digital communication system.

In order to understand the basic use of Encoder and Decoder, let me explain with a simple example:

Consider battle field scenario, there commanders have to deal with high digital data exchange. Each signal and information is important and data loss cannot be afforded, but what happens in real time due to noise and disturbance in the media, there are chances of losing the actual content of data or it may get corrupted, in order to over come that, we use few powerful encoding and decoding techniques. At the encoder part it converts one form of data into another format (depends on encoder and decoder technique) it includes redundant bits. Once encoding is done, it is transmitted via wireless or wired media, but during transmission due to noise data gets corrupted. At decoding it got a capability to detect the error and correct it, this way original signal can be reconstructed.
