When the number of variables is greater than the number of formulated equations then it is difficult to reach to a specific solution. In order to restrict or omit the unknowns and get the solution we need stress tensor in fluid mechanics.
Stress tensors when applied they accommodate the two to three variables in a equation by considering magnitude and two direction at a time. So this reduces the number of unknowns.
