A scientist believes that the frequency of cricket chirping is a good predictor of the ambient temperature. A random sample produced the following data where x is the number of cricket chirps in one minute and y is the ambiet temperature in Fahrenheit.

x 128, 227, 188, 150, 210, 185, 137, 171

y 70, 83, 84, 76, 89, 83, 72, 80

(a) Find an equation of the least squares regression line. Round the slope and y-intercept value to two decimal places. Describe the method used for getting results.

(b) Based on the equation from part (a), what is the predicted temperature when a cricket chirps 300 times in one minute? Show work.

(c) Based on the equation from part (a), what is the predicted temperature when a cricket chirps 140 times in one minute? Show work.

(d) Which predicted temperature that you calculated for (b) and (c) do you think is closer to the true temperature and why?

Example 19.8. The frequency of chirping of a cricket is thought to be related to temperature. This suggests the possibility that temperature can be estimated from the chirp frequency. Let the following data on the number chirps per second, r by the striped ground cricket and the temperature, y in Fahrenheit is shown below: 20 1620 18 17 16 15 17 15 16 8972 93 8481 75 7082 69 83 Find the normal regression line that approximates the regression of...

The Cricket Thermometer The rate of chirping of the snowy tree cricket (Oecanthus fultoni Walker) varies with temperature in a predictable way. A linear relationship provides a good match to the chirp rate, but an even more accurate relationship is the following: N=(5.63×1010)e−(6290K)/T In this expression, N is the number of chirps in 13.0 s and T is the temperature in kelvins. Part A If a cricket is observed to chirp 200 times in 60.0 s, what is the temperature...
