How does Numbers 13:17-33 apply to the research process? (250 words)
Numbers 13:17-33, Moses uses the research process as below:
- Identifying the area of study- Exploring Canaan. God instructed Moses to send some men to explore Canaan.
- Choosing the research study- Moses decided to obey God’s words and chose to explore Canaan.
- Create research plan and methodology- Moses plan is that the men need to go up through the Negev. Moses instructed the men to see what the land is like, how many people are living in it, what kind of land it is – good or bad, Is it unwalled or is there any fort, how is the soil, etc. Then, Moses said them to bring the fruit of that land at any means.
- Collection of information- The men went through Negev as instructed by Moses and came to a place called Hebron. Once they reached the valley of Eshkol, they collected fruits like pomegranates, grapes and figs. They saw the people living in it (descendants of Anak).
- Analyzing and interpreting- Once the men returned after exploring , they said that they went to the place and found that the country is flowing with milk and honey. They also said that the people are strong and powerful and the cities are fortified which makes it impossible to conquer. They gave a bad report to the assembly and Moses that the people in the land would devour those living in it. They are so huge that these men looked like grasshoppers and we cannot conquer them.
- Concluding the research- Israelites grumbled that they might get Canaan due to the powerful people in there.
From the above , I would say that the research process arose from the Bible verses and its concepts. If Moses haven’t planned and designed the exploring process, then the concept of research planning and methodology that we use today would not have been known.
