Answer #1

An organisation should take into account the following factors while choosing a topology :

  1. Cost - Some network topologies are more expensive to install than other, hence budget plays an important role in selection of the network topology. Like, mesh topology is expensive while bus topology is very cheap.
  2. Reliability - It is easier to detect and isolate faults in some topology, hence making them reliable. Star and mesh topologies are very reliable while bus topology is not.
  3. Area coverage - If we need a small area coverage (LAN) then we can use any of the topologies available. But for larger area coverage Ring Topology works well.
  4. Hardware requirements - Different topologies have some different hardware requirements. Depending on the availability of certain hardware the topology is selected.
  5. Future Scope Expansion of the network - If there is a scope for expanding the network in future then we should choose a topology which is easier and cheaper to expand.

I think, the Bus topology is outdated. Even though it is cheap, it is not at all reliable as a small fault in the central backbone line can shut down the entire network. More so, it is very difficult to find the fault. Nowadays, organisations are more keen at reliability than money. And, bus topology does not provide that.
