Yes, transformer known polarities is requirement for parallel operation of transformer for increasing the efficiency of unit when load requirement is more, more flexibilty, easy in maintenance, less stress on one unit , more consevation of energy by closing the units when it is light load.
We can know the polarities of transformer by conducting polarity test . In polarity test, by shorting any two terminal and connecting a MI type voltmeter between other two terminal.
When transformer is excited by ac source , it will show deflection in the voltmeter. Observe the readings , if the readings are additive then change the polarity of the terminal and if it is subtractive reading then the transformer are connected in same polarity.
Additive reading are not considered because of more voltage stress in the winding which leads to damge of insulation resulting in damage of transformer.
