Organisation-A is a large enterprise that has one class-A network address for all its needs. Discuss the addressing problem that Organisation-A could face with its one class-A network and how it could use subnetting to help it to overcome that problem. How would the situation be different if Organisation-A had gotten a classless (CIDR) address instead?

Answer #1

In case of Class A, we have 24 bits for the hosts and the initial just 8 bits for the network ID's, thus there comes a problem when we actually need to divide the network into smaller parts because it is not possible to be done with such a small number of network bits and also we do not have so many numbers of hosts for one network. As in one network, we can have 224 hosts and the requirement of so many numbers of hosts in a network is not useful. Thus this wastage of the number of hosts is the biggest problem in the class A network organization.

We can use subnetting in order to take some bits from the host and then we can divide the one big network into small networks, thus earlier as one network of class A has so many not-useful hosts can now be converted into the small networks having less number of hosts in each subnetwork.

Classless inter-domain routing(CIDR): can help here in order to make the subnets very easily so we can borrow any number of bits(x) from the hosts and we can make 2x subnetworks. So in this way with the help of CIDR, we can use the subnetting at a greater extent and then use the hosts which were earlier not used.
