Salicylic acid and acetic anhydride are synthesized with phosphoric acid to catalyze the reaction to make acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).

  1. How will you know if you have successfully synthesized acetylsalicylic acid?
  2. What compound will you have if you did NOT successfully synthesize acetylsalicylic acid, and how can you confirm it?

Answer #1

* during the course of reaction; plot the single spot of product formed during the reaction on TLC paper and then stand the paper for some time in desired solvent. if the spot remains single this suggest that product formed. and if single spot divided into two spots then the product doesn't formed.
* if we don't successfully synthesise the acetyl salicylicacid then the reactant remains as such in the reaction. and it can be confirm by Thin layer chromatography(TLC).
