Elyn Saks: A Tale of Mental Illness

1. Imagine you find a young woman in the library...highly disheveled, as if she hadn’t bathed in a week, rocking back and forth speaking words that make no sense when strung together. She is babbling uncontrollably, singing “Come to the Florida Sunshine Bush where they make lemons where they make demons!” and frankly scaring you. In that moment, what kind of future would you imagine for such a person?

4. How does she describe hallucinations and delusions? Give examples.

1. If I see such a person, I may first try to empathize, what would have caused this state of her. Is it overwhelming stress from life stressors ? Or is she a schizophrenia patient ? If this state of her continues, she would lose all of her life's blessing such as home, job, family and end up in asylum. There is nothing positive to look forward in her future. If she is attended, there may be chances of her getting cured and bouncing back to normal life. However, the things which left her, will have a hard chance of coming back.
