Espionage is the act of spying.Industrial espionage is stealing trade secrets for money or for the benefit of a foreign country.In contrast corporate spying refers to legal or illegal information gathering of employees and companies without their knowledge or consent.

Economic espionage is conducted by governments and is international in scope. But corporate espionage is national and occurs between companies or corporations.

Economic espionage is the unlawful targeting and theft of critical economic intelligence such as trade secrets and intellectual property. Economic espionage differs from corporate espionage in a number of ways

• It may be state - sponsored
• It may have motives other than profit or gain.
• It may larger in scale and scope.

Economic and industrial espionage take place in two forms:

1. It may include the acquisition of intellectual property like information on industrial manufacture, ideas, techniques and processes, recipes and formulas.
2. It may be sequestration of proprietary or operational information such as that on customer data sets,pricing, sales, marketing, research and development, policies, planning or marketing strategies or the changing composition and locations of production.

Types of industrial espionage:

1. Trespassing on competitor's property or accessing their files without permission.
2. Posing as a competitor's employee in order to learn company's trade secret or other confidential secrets.
3. Wiretapping a competitor.
4. Hacking into competitor's computer.
5. Attacking a competitor's website with malware.
