a 25% sucrose solution is separated from a 15% sucrose solution by a membrane impermeable to sucrose, but permeable to water, in which direction will net movement of water occur?

Select one:

a. From the 15% sucrose solution to the 25% sucrose solution only.

b. From the 25% sucrose solution to the 15% sucrose solution only.

c. There will be no net movement of water in this case.

d. From the 15% sucrose solution to the 25% sucrose solution and from the 25% sucrose solution to the 15% sucrose solution.

e. None of the answers are correct.

Answer #1

It is noted that a 25% sucrose solution is separated from 15% sucrose solution by a membrane which is permeable to water and impermeable to sucrose.

In 15% sucrose solution 15% of sucrose and 85% of water is present. In 25% of sucrose solution 25% of sucrose and 75% of water is present. Thus the water potential of 15% sucrose solution is more than that of 25% of sucrose solution. We know that water moves from high water potential to low water potential. So water will move from the 15% sucrose solution to 25% sucrose solution only.

The correct answer is option (a) that is from the 15% sucrose solution to to 25% sucrose solution only.
