With an increase in straight chain alkanes (more carbons present), there will be a linear relationship between number of carbons and refractive index.
Why is this? What is the reasoning?

First you should know that as density increases , refrective index also increases. So, it means refrective index is directly proportional to density of substance.

Now, come to second point.

With increase in number of carbon in straight chain in alkane , density also increase with increasing number of carbon atom.

As a combined effect of both of the above points ,

As the number of carbon atom in straight increases, density also increase, therefore refrective index also increases.
