Based on the video and what you know about natural selection, which of the following must be true if evolution is the explanation for what the Grants have observed over time on Daphne? Select all that apply.

Beak depth and length must be heritable.
Beak depth and length must affect survival and/or reproduction of birds.
The beaks of individual birds can change depending on what food is available.
Over time, individuals can evolve to better fit the environment by changing heritable traits.
Food must be plentiful for all birds.

Answer #1

Peter and Rosemary Grant studied various traits of finches on the Daphne island. They observed that the main driving force was availability of food, which influence survival rates of finches. Different finches possesses different beak shape and size ,and thus have different survival ability.

Natural selection is the process by which the most adaptive (fittest) individuals are selected and have a chance to leave their offsprings.

Correct choices should be:

Beak depth and length must be heritable.
Beak depth and length must affect survival and/or reproduction of birds.
Beak depth and length must show variation among individuals of a single species.

please help me with these problems. thank you Introduction The Island of Daphne Major, one of several islands that make up the archipelago of islands off the coast of Ecuador, supports a population of ground finches, Geospiza fortis. Finches are small songbirds with chunky beaks which they use to crack open seeds from various shrubs and trees on the island. These seeds make up most of the finch diet. Biologists have been studying this population for over 30 years. Each...

How Does Evolutionary Change Occur? "I soon perceived that selection was the keystone of man's success in making useful races of animals and plants. But how selection could be applied to organisms living in a state of nature remained for some time a mystery to me." - Charles Darwin Introduction Fundamentally, evolution is the idea that the form and behaviors of a species are not fixed - that they can change over time. Before Darwin was even born, some scientists...
