One principle you will learn is that more craters on a surface indicate that the surface is older. But, the Moon and Mercury have more craters than Earth, Mars and Venus. So, are the Moon and Mercury older than the Earth, Mars and Venus? If so, how does the formation of the solar system explain that? If not, why do Mars, Venus and Earth have so few craters as compared to Mercury and the Moon?

No, the Moon and Mercury are not older than the other terrestrial planets of the solar system.

The Mercury and the moon lack an atmosphere which on other planets has eroded, weathered or destroyed the meteorites by wind, water or due to friction. So that is the reason why we can see many craters on moon and mercury.
