A fire arm of mass 0.1 kg fires a bullet of mass 1g that gains a velocity of 10 m/sec. The velocity gain of the fire arm due to recoil is 0.1m/sec. By how much foes the momentum of the fire arm increase, measured in kg m/sec?

Answer #1

Solution:

initial momentum of fire arm = 0 kgm/s

final momentum of fire arm = m * v = 0.1 * 0.1 = 0.01 kgm/s

=> increase in momentum = 0.01 - 0

=> increase in momentum = 0.01 kg m/s

    A gun with inertia 5.5 kg fires a 13-g bullet at a stationary target located 1.0 km away. After the bullet leaves the gun, its speed decreases (constant x component of acceleration a = -1.0 m/s2 ) so that the bullet hits the target at 299 m/s. If the direction in which the bullet moves is along a positive x coordinate axis, what is the recoil velocity of the gun?

    In principle, when you fire a rifle, the recoil should push you backward. How big a push will it give? Let's find out by doing a calculation in a very artificial situation. Suppose a man standing on frictionless ice fires a rifle horizontally. The mass of the man together with the rifle is 70 kg, and the mass of the bullet is 10 g. If the bullet leaves the muzzle at a speed of 500 m/s, what is the final...
