Answer) Constitutive enzymes are always present in the cell while inductive enzyme production is dependent upon the substrate concentration. These two types of enzymes are very important for better functioning of microorganisms. For example, In E. coli cells the constitutive enzymes are always present which are responsible for the process of glycolysis. These enzymes will help in the assimilation of glucose which is the main food source for E. coli bacteria. However, there are cases when glucose is not present in the environment and E. coli is then forced to feed on other food sources like lactose. In such cases, inducible enzymes come in play such as a beta-galactosidase enzyme, which is produced by the bacteria in response to the substrate (lactose) availability.

Therefore, both constitutive enzymes and inductive enzymes are responsible for the better efficiency of microorganisms.
