Question

A retailer wishes to buy a number of transistor radio sets of types A and B....

A retailer wishes to buy a number of transistor radio sets of types A and B. Type A cost $36 each and type B cost $24 each. The retailer knows that he cannot sell more than 20 sets, so he does not want to buy more than 20 sets and he cannot afford to pay more than $576. His expectation is that he would get a profit of $5 for each set of type A and $4 for each set of type B. Formulate a mathematical model to find how many of each type should be purchased in order to make his total profit as large as possible?

Answer #1

Let,

x1 = number of radio sets of type A to buy
x2 = number of radio sets of type B to buy

Objective is to make profit = Max 5x1+4x2

Subject to,

36x1+24x2 <= 576 (Cost constraint)
x1+x2 <= 20 (Number constraint)

x1,x2 >= 0 (Non-negativity constraint)

Solving in solver we get,

x1 = number of radio sets of type A to buy = 8
x2 = number of radio sets of type B to buy = 12

Maximized profit = 88
