You do 1000 J of work lifting a 25 kg box from the floor to a shelf, only to have it accidentally fall off. About how high is the shelf?
Work-done is given by:
W = F.d = F*d*cos A
F = Force applied by you against gravity = m*g
m = mass of box = 25 kg
d = displacement of box = distance from floor to shelf = ?
A = Angle between Force and displacement = 180 deg
W = Work-done by you against gravity = -1000 J (-ve sign means work-done against gravity)
So,
d = W/(F*cos A)
d = -1000/(25*9.8*cos 180 deg)
d = height of shelf = 4.08 m

you lift a 2 kg box from the first to the second floor of a building by climbing the stairs and perform 300j of work. how much work is needed to lift the box, straight up vertically, from the first to the second floor of the same building
When you lift a box from the floor to a shelf, the potential energy of the box on the shelf Question 23 options: a) all of the above. b) equals 1/2 mv2. c) is converted to heat as the box is raised. d) equals the work against gravity that you did on the box.
Imagine that there is a heavy box sitting on the floor that you want to lift up & carry across the room. A. How do the forces compare: i. The force initially needed to lift the box off the ground ii. The force needed to continue lifting the box (vertically) in order to then carry it across the room? B. Explain why this makes sense to you.
